Wateringbury Local History Society
The History Society has been established since the early nineteen seventies
and has some 70-80 members per year on average. It meets the third Wednesday
in every month at the Village Hall commencing at 7.45pm (not July or August)
When selecting our speakers and subjects we endeavour to encompass as wide
a range as possible to include the humorous, serious and entertaining whilst
remembering that we are a ‘History Society’ We also organise an
annual outing to places of interest, this year we are visiting Godington House
near Ashford and Charing Church and village.
The Society has published several booklets, the most recent in 2005 was called ‘About Wateringbury’ These booklets contain articles about people both famous within the village and outside, places of interest past and present, and contain snippets of information that would be forever forgotten. The Society also has a good library of documents and books relating to the district, which can be loaned to members.
Our year runs from September to July with our AGM in June when the new programme is presented. New members are very welcome and details are available from committee members or just turn up at the next meeting and join then. The subscription for the past 2 years has been £6 (£1 per meeting for visitors) which is very good value for 9 interesting talks and a Wine & Cheese Evening held in May at a house of local interest. (A short resume of the previous meeting is always published in Rostrum together with details of the next meeting)
